ABOUT US
2008-2009
1.Students are encouraged to take part in upcoming student chapter meetings/activities through bulletin board postings throughout the pharmacy building, internal electronic discussion group and announcements preceding our weekly seminars.
2.An outreach to professional pharmacy students will be initiated by introducing AAPS through articles in publications circulated within the UIC College of Pharmacy (e.g. the UIC College of Pharmacy Dean's Dispatch) and professional organizations meetings encouraging them to join AAPS as student members.
3.As we become more established and organized we also plan to approach other departments within University of Illinois at Chicago (i.e. Chemistry, Chemical Engineering) during the university-wide quarterly graduate student council meetings and invite them to discover how AAPS membership may benefit them.
4.Speakers from leading pharmaceutical companies will be invited to give seminars related to their work as well as meet with students one-on-one or in small groups giving counsel on issues concerning professional advancement and leadership skills. If possible, students will be given an opportunity to have their curriculum vitaes reviewed and improve interview skills with the help of the invited speakers.
5.The student chapter will encourage its student members to visit local biotechnology companies, and participate in local AAPS functions (e.g. the Chicagoland discussion groups). It will also encourage its members to attend national and regional meetings so that they are aware of the latest advances and discoveries in the pharmaceutical sciences.
6.The student chapter plans to perform outreach programs that will spread information about opportunities in the pharmaceutical sciences. These outreach programs can range from lecturing to incoming undergraduate pharmacy students about graduate opportunities in pharmaceutics to attending regional scientific meetings (i.e. ACS) to meet with undergraduates interested in going to graduate school.
7.The Department of Biopharmaceutical Sciences at University of Illinois at Chicago currently sponsors about 25 graduate students each summer to participate in the Pharmaceutics Graduate Student Research Meeting (PGSRM) organized and attended by graduate students in pharmaceutical sciences from the Midwest. The student chapter will take an active role in sponsoring and participating in PGSRM in the event when PGSRM is held in Chicago and University of Illinois at Chicago is the host.
